With today’s economic situation many companies are opting not to provide health insurance for their employees. Soon, though, this won’t be an option, as the current administration has passed legislation in the past few years that’s going to fully revamp the American health insurance industry.
Although it’s something that’s difficult to fully address, here’s a rough list of the top ten insurance companies in the US today with brief descriptions.
1.) United Health Group Offering both individual and group insurance, United Health Group is believed by many to be the frontrunner in today’s industry. Not only do they offer an extensive range of health benefits, they also include several health services including their Optimum Health Plan, Ingenix health information technology, and Prescription Solutions pharmacy benefits.
2.) Wellpoint Inc. Group. This company which stems from Mutual and blankets over several other well-known corporations has the prominence to be outstanding in today’s market, offering an array of health care services and helping with the costs of all types of medical expenses.
3.) Kaiser Foundation Group. Kaiser Permanente’s popularity has persisted throughout the decades, making it one of the strongest corporations in the industry. The Kaiser Health Plan insures just under 9 million people, bringing it well towards the top of any list of the nation’s most common plans.
4.) Aetna Group. Similarly, Aetna has also been around for ages and knows the ropes of insuring individuals. Aetna’s individual plans are extremely popular, due in part to their affordability. Aetna also offers additional forms of insurance, such as life insurance and dental insurance.
5.) Humana Group. Many sites feature the Humana Group as their frontrunner of the industry but multiple sources place them lower. They’re known for having extremely reasonable rates and catering towards the individual more than some providers. They’re popular for this and for their customer service, which many review as being top notch.
6.) HCSC Group. The Health Care Service Corporation ranks somewhere in the middle on most lists, but the reality is that they’re a popular favorite among consumers. Health Care Service Corporation focuses mostly on the well-being of the community, and that’s where their business stemmed from. They’re a major corporation but strive to have the feel of a smaller company, placing focus on the individual.
7.) Coventry Health Care. Coventry offers more extensive coverage than a number of health providers do. Specifically, they offer individual PPOs, HMOs and similar programs. They’re more consumer-oriented, much like Health Care Service Corporation, giving the feel of a smaller company focusing on their clients intently.
8.) Cigna Health Group. Cigna offers an array of plans focused towards the self-employed or those in need of short-term coverage. But above and beyond that, they’re still one of the nation’s largest providers. They’re a popular favorite for group insurance among many companies. Furthermore, Cigna has an emphasis in behavioral health insurance, providing more options and coverage for mental health hygiene.
9.) Blue Cross Blue Shield. Most states have their own subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield but overall the company is extremely popular and meets with top notch reviews from clients. The company likely would rank higher though their services aren’t always popular depending on which state you’re in. They’re extremely popular among employers, offering Blue Cross Blue Shield services as their group insurance. They feature medical, dental, life, disability, and occasionally vision insurance and even include behavior health benefits that exceed those of many competitors.
10.) Unumprovident corporation. Similar to Blue Cross Blue Shield, Unum Provident exists in several forms in many different states. Their popularity changes from state to state, but they’re often utilizied in the states where they are offered. They’re big with employers, offering prominent group insurance packages but also serve the self-employed with individual plans.
Sources ranging from USA Today to prominent blogs confirm this ranking, with most sources placing these ten companies in their top ten lists.
