Who are they?
First Savings Bank, FSB, is a FDIC-insured bank that was established in 1989. However, eventually the FSB
was dropped. Now it goes by simply First Savings Bank. The bank’s headquarter office is located in Beresford, South Dakota. In 1995, the First Savings Bank acquired two New Mexico based banking institutions, Sun World Bank and Home Federal Savings Bank. First Savings Bank operates 22 offices throughout 6 states (NV, AZ, SD, NE, NM, and TX) and as of June 30th held over $375 million in deposits. It is also affiliated with First National Banks, which has branches in IL, IA, MN, SD and CO.
First Savings Bank professes to stand by its mission of commitment… commitment to providing great products, personalized services and excellence overall.
In the news
First Savings Bank has not been in the news lately. Actually it was hard to find any information about this bank. However, circulating the web are few rip-off reports and comments posted by pissed customers regarding a MasterCard issued by the bank.
The gist of the card holder complaints is that First Savings credit card is a total sham.
The card
In piecing together information posted by First Savings credit card holders, here is what I gather about the card:
The basics
- You can only apply for the card if you receive a special invitation through the mail
- The invitations are targeted to people what have less than stellar credit. Or to be frank… the invitations are sent to those with horrible credit who are desperate to repair their credit situation yet have very limited options.
- Invitations can be accepted through this site or by mailing the completed application to a Sioux Falls, SD address
- An applicant’s identity may need to be verified by sending in a copy of a driver’s license and utility bill
- Credit limit typically max out at $300 and limits are rarely increased
- $35 processing fee to apply for the card
- $50 annual fee
- $110 fee to have the card activated
- $6 monthly participation fee
- $29 over the limit fee
- Once issued, card is hard to cancel
- Uses LTD Financial Services, L.P. to collect on delinquent accounts
The extras
- Ain’t none… unless you count a headache as an extra
My take
First Savings MasterCard offers its holders an opportunity to develop a positive credit relationship. This allows consumers to build or rebuild their tarnished credit. Well… that’s the premise anyway. The truth, on the other hand, is quite different. Let’s do the math:
$300 card limit
Less $35 processing fee
Less $110 activation fee
Less $50 annual fee
Now you’re left with what? $105 in credit
Ok, so let’s say you want to go shopping. So you use your brand new credit card to fill up your gas tank at the neighborhood Exxon. With today’s gas prices, that’ll set you back a 100 bucks. Well hell, all your credit is used up and you have not even made it to the mall.
But wait… it gets better. At the end of the month, First Savings applies the $6 monthly participation fee to your account.
Now you’re at $301… and BAM! You’re socked with a $29 over the limit fee! Doesn’t sound like a good deal to me.
My take, if you get this First Savings invitation in the mail… please do yourself a favor and chuck it. It will not lead you to the road of good credit.

Today I was threatened by Eileen, a customer service supervisor of FIRST SAVINGS CREDIT CARD 888-469-0291 because I complained about a ten day hold being placed on a $500 payment I made on my account. She said that it was in the contract that they can take money out of my bank account and then not credit it to my FIRST SAVINGS CREDIT CARD. When I complained that this was fraudulent as the money was taken by EFT form my bank account, she said that was too bad. I said this wasn’t right and I was going to complain to the parent company (FIRST SAVINGS BANK 201 N. Third
Box 431 Beresford, SD 57004 Ph: 605.763.2009) . Eileen then laughed and said she could arrange to have me hurt even though I lived out of state as they have “contractors” working all over the country. She further stated that she had control of my credit card and could charge against the account anything she wanted and if I didn’t pay she would “ruin me”.
Now I have been a customer of FIRST SAVINGS CREDIT CARD for over five years. In that time I have had minor problems with erroneous over limit charges, but today’s criminal activities on behalf of an employee of FIRST SAVINGS CREDIT CARD and FIRST SAVINGS BANK were way worse than anything I have encountered with any creditor. I have filed complaints directly with the South Dakota Attorney General’s office, the FBI, the FTC and my local law enforcement agencies. I am also filing this report to publicize their threats in case some serious bodily harm is inflicted ion me by “contractors” of FIRST SAVINGS CREDIT CARD FIRST SAVINGS BANK.
Before filing this report, I checked on the internet and found many complaints of this type of activity by employees of FIRST SAVINGS CREDIT CARD and FIRST SAVINGS BANK.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUNCH OF CROOKS AND CRIMINALS OR RISK LOSING YOUR CREDIT AND MAYBE YOUR LIFE.

I had to file bankruptcy after my husband’s death in 2003. First Savings was one of the best deals I could find at the time..yeah pricy but when your credit score is low you take what you can get. I have had the card for 6 years now..they have increased my credit limit twice and I have never gotten hit with an over limit or late fee. If you are really trying to rebuild your credit this may be an expensive but good first step. Other offers I got at the time all wanted deposits against an account plus high monthly fees! At least First Savings spells it all out clearly in their invitation and all you have to do is keep track of your spending & payment, which can all be done online!!

Jacque reply on June 5th, 2010:
I to had to file bankruptcy. I have received credit card offers and this was one of them. I replied to the invitation and they started me off with $1000 credit limit and only charged me the annual fee of $75. I still had $925 available credit where as other credit cards I have only gave me a $300 credit limit. When your credit is not that great, you have to pretty much take what you can get including high fees to get your credit score back up to where it’s supposed to be.
Like Carol, I have had this card for several years. I don’t remember a $110 fee to initiate the card. There is no max limit at $300. In fact, I’ve gotten two raises since my inception. My credit score has gone from mid-400s to the high 600s because of my maintaining it.
Oh, and I don’t think it would be any more difficult to cancel than other credit card. That is relative to the individual card user’s discipline. You want to cancel the card? Pay it off and it stop using it.
First Savings Credit Card offers great customer service, and is an ideal card for what it is meant for; to assist those of us that need to re-build or improve on credit worthiness.

Well I just wanted to say that the person stating all these facts are LIES!!! I have a First Savings Credit Card for almost a year now and when I opened up my account they only charged a processing fee which was not high at all….so whatever drugs this person is doing needs to stop making false accusation’s…. I love my card the customer service is SUPER FRIENDLY!! I have since gotten a credit increase that they sent me….like an increase offer in the mail. My credit score has gone up slowly because I believe that to build credit takes time….just like it took time for you to make it go bad too!! So don’t believe what you read!! Rgey are just trying to get you to buy their products….think about that one….. : /
