Who wants to save a few hundred bucks?
If you don’t carry vision insurance, glasses can be incredibly expensive. Â Even if you do have a policy in place, it may feature relatively low limits and you can still end up paying a fair chunk of change out of pocket in order to have your vision needs met.
But what can you really do about it? Â All of the shops seem to have similar prices and you don’t have the option of walking around with blurred vision until someone takes mercy on you and drops the price of frames in one of those mall-based stores. Â You gotta see. Â You gotta get the glasses.
Stop. Â Before you drop a few to several hundred dollars on a new eyeglasses, you might awant to consider getting the specs online. Â That’s a great way to get what you need at a fraction of the regular cost.
There are several online eyeglass sellers who can get you set up with a complete pair of glasses for well under $50. Â Sometimes, it’s even possible to cut that price tag nearly in half. Â If you’re not happy with the idea of spending $300 for a pair of glasses from a Main Street vendor when you can get a nearly identical pair for $40, you’re a prime candidate for online glasses shopping.
Many people are reluctant to buy glasses online. Â They are, smartly, concerned about treating their eyes well. Â The idea of gambling with their vision health in order to save a few dollars just doesn’t make sense to them.
Fortunately, there is very little risk of any problems stemming from the use of these deep discount glasses. Â While professionals in the brick and mortar optometry world have expressed concerns about the quality of cheap eyeglasses (particularly with respect to the frames), I haven’t encountered anyone who feels that there is a medical risk associated with them.
I personally purchased two inexpensive pairs of eyeglasses last year. Â I asked an acquaintance of mine who runs a high-end eyewear store if I made a poor decision in terms of my vision. Â He cautioned me about the quality and long-term sturdiness of the frames, but said there was very little risk of problems associated with using the cut-rate alternative.
If you’re interested in saving a few hundred dollars on your glasses, you’ll need a few things before placing an order. Â First, you’ll need a current prescription. Â You can’t (nor would you want to) avoid getting a professional eye examination. Â Your doctor will be willing to give you your prescription after the exam. Â Second, you’ll need what is known as a PD measurement. Â This represents the distance between your pupils and is used to make sure that the glasses you order will fit and function correctly. Â If your doctor doesn’t provide you with this information, it is possible to take the measurement yourself. Â Most online glasses vendors provide instruction on how to discern your PD number.
You’re going to lose a little bit by saving money on glasses. Â You won’t be able to avail yourself of the cleanings and fittings offered by brick and mortar operations. Â You’re also likely to get lower quality frames. Â Not surprisingly, though, many buyers of online specs are more than willing to give up those “extras” in order to bank a few hundred bucks.
Are you in need of glasses? Â Do you feel as though saving a few hundred dollars on your next eyeglass purchase sounds like a good idea? Â If so, you might want to order your next glasses via the Internet. Â With a little smart shopping, you should be able to tend to your vision needs while keeping as much of your hard-earned cash as possible.

I’m not a hardcore frugalista, but this is one area where it’s easy to save big bucks without sacrificing quality. I highly recommend ordering glasses online to everyone. In my experience with 14 pairs, the quality has NOT been lower than what you’d find in a brick-and-mortar store.

You’re right. Even those who aren’t constantly on the lookout for savings have to be impressed with this one. It’s easy to see that people drop a fortune on eyewear and it looks (see how I’m making puns here?) like buying online can save a bundle.
