Reward credit cards are another great option for a lot of people looking to make the most of the credit card they have. In fact these credit cards are some of my favorite kind of credit cards. I like the fact that you can get reward cards on practically anything nowadays. And with the way the economy is slumping, now couldn’t be a better time to start looking at these kinds of cards.
The banks and other institutions are getting more and more competitive in trying to offer sweeter, and sweeter deals to entice you and keep you as a credit card customer. This is to a large degree because you and I and the rest of us aren’t spending as much money as freely and wantonly as we used to. So to keep things interesting and to encourage us, they’re offering all manner of carrots to put in front of the donkey.
We’ll look at some of the types of reward credit cards that are out there and I’ll give you an idea of some of my favorites. As I mentioned earlier, I really love these cards. When I’m looking for a new card or just wanting to test one out, these cards are one of the first groups I start researching to see how juicy the rewards are getting.
Reward credit cards are a big category of cards. Airline reward cards are in this category, but they’re big enough that I’ll give them a separate article. Another popular reward program is the gas rewards credit cards and I’ve spoken about them elsewhere. But you can get all sorts of reward cards out there.
On of the most popular is the point system reward credit card. In this situation you get points for each purchase you make on practically anything you buy. This is on of the most standard and popular programs out there because of its ease of use. A lot of folks enjoy being able to choose the reward they want. And with point programs you can often choose from a whole catalog of neat products that you can buy. Some of the point reward credit cards will even have an air mile type reward system in place.
I personally really like the cash back card. With both the cash back and points type of card, the reward might not be as big as with other credit card offers but its versatility truly helps make it a big seller. You can expect on average with these cards to have a cash back or point rebate rate of around 1, maybe 2% if you’re lucky. But this is not bad, especially if you use your credit card for practically all the purchases you can make. I know of some folks who are getting over a thousand dollars back each year. You can figure out how much they’re spending!
But the biggest problem with this kind of card is that to make the most of it you have to put a lot of spending onto it. And this takes a lot of willpower to do it well. Most people have a tendency to overspend whenever they make a purchase on credit. And this is a well known fact that credit card companies use to their advantage. So be sure to exercise care and diligence when using your credit card for any purchases you make. It can be tempting and easy to go overboard. And another thing with reward credit cards is to watch out for expirations on their points. This can sometimes happen. And you don’t want to have spent all that money earning all those points, if you’re not able to use them.
