Department store & retail credit cards have been around for a very long time, and were amongst the first type of credit card many of us held. They often started with small credit limits such as $100 or $500, and were, and still are, a great way to begin building a credit history.
Generally speaking these types of cards were easier to qualify for than a regular credit card. They are still widely used today, as merchants want to entice customers to be repeat shoppers in their business.
Stores of all variety will usually offer their own credit card, and sometimes they may be in combination with one of the major banks, such as Visa or MasterCard.
